Aeroponics cultivation - Principles of nutrient solution ratio adjustment

14-08-2025

The ratio of nutrients in the nutrient solution used for greenhouse  aeroponics cultivation also has many specific requirements. Today, let's take a look at what principles need to be followed.

1.Balanced nutrition. This formula must contain all the nutrients necessary for plant growth. The nutrient solution is the main source of mineral nutrition for soilless plants and the sole source of nutrition in aeroponics. Among the 16 essential nutrients identified for plants, except for carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which are provided by air and water, the remaining 13 nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, molybdenum, boron, and chlorine are all provided by mineral nutrition. Some trace elements are needed in very small amounts by plants, and the amounts aeroponics cultivation required by plants (such as trace elements) are already included in the contact between water and air, so sometimes additional addition is not necessary.

2. Good water solubility. All compounds in soilless culture the nutrient solution formula must be in a form that plants can absorb, that is, they must have good water solubility in order to soilless culture be effectively absorbed and utilized by soilless culture plants. The compounds generally selected are mostly inorganic salts. Some nutrient solution formulas also use some other organic compounds, such as amide nitrogen urea as a nitrogen source. Other organic fertilizers soilless culture that cannot be directly absorbed and utilized by plants are not suitable as the fertilizer source for the nutrient solution.

3. Scientific proportioning. The quantities and proportions of various nutrient elements in the nutrient solution must be suitable for the normal growth requirements of the plants, to ensure effective absorption and balance. When preparing the nutrient solution, generally, while ensuring that the varieties of essential nutrient elements for the aeroponics cultivation plants are complete, the use of other trace nutrients should be minimized to prevent excessive ions or other impurities in the compound from affecting the normal growth of the plants.

4. High stability. During the planting soilless culture process, the various compounds in the nutrient solution formula should maintain their effectiveness over a long period of time. They should not lose their activity within a short period due to aeroponics cultivationk, air oxidation, root absorption, or interactions between ions.

5. Appropriate concentration. The total concentration (salt concentration) of various compounds in the nutrient solution formula should be suitable for the normal growth requirements of the plants.soilless culture  plants will not suffer from a lack of fertilizer due to an insufficient concentration, aeroponics cultivation nor will they be harmed by excessive concentration of salt.

6. Acid-base stability. During the growth process of soilless culture plants, the overall physiological acid-base reaction of the nutrient solution must be relatively stable, and the pH value should be maintained between 5.5 and 6.6.
