How to choose the greenhouse covering material?

23-05-2025

When constructing a Verlo-style multi-span greenhouse, the selection of the top covering material is of vital importance. It directly affects the performance, lifespan and yield of the greenhouse.

1. Consider light transmittance

Good light transmission is the primary consideration. Adequate sunlight must pass through the top covering material to provide the energy needed for photosynthesis for the crops inside the greenhouse. For example, glass has a high light transmittance, allowing most of the sunlight to directly enter the greenhouse, creating an ideal growing environment for plants that require plenty of sunlight. There are also solar panels, usually made of double-layer hollow material, with a light transmittance of around 80%.

II. Pay attention to the insulation performance

Different top covering materials have significant differences in their insulation performance. During the cold season, materials with good insulation properties can effectively reduce heat loss and maintain an appropriate temperature inside the greenhouse. Sunshade panels have good insulation performance. They can to some extent prevent the conduction of heat, making the temperature inside the greenhouse relatively stable. Installing glass on the top is usually single-layer tempered glass, and its insulation performance is not as good as that of sunshade panels.

III. Evaluation of Durability

Travelling greenhouses are usually used for a long period of time, so the durability of the top covering material is of vital importance. Although glass is strong and durable, it is costly and heavy, and the installation and maintenance are relatively complex.

The top of the multi-span greenhouse is equipped with solar panels, which have multiple advantages such as high strength, good durability, and balanced light transmission and heat insulation performance. It is also a good choice. Generally, high-quality solar panels have a lifespan of about 10 years.

4. Taking cost factors into consideration

Cost is an important factor that cannot be ignored. The prices of different top cover materials vary significantly. Glass is relatively expensive but has stable performance; while sunshade panels have a lower cost and good insulation properties. When making a choice, one should make a comprehensive assessment based on one's own economic strength and planting requirements.
